Working with Architects on Residential Projects

A landscape design partner who thinks the way you do

The best residential projects are conceived as a whole. They consider the landscape and the architecture together from the very beginning. From where a building sits on a site and the way light moves through a space, to the moment a client steps from their kitchen into their garden, everything feels entirely seamless.

We work with architects and interior designers on residential projects across Yorkshire, the North of England and beyond. We bring the same rigour, design intelligence and attention to detail to the outdoor space that you bring to the building, and we join the conversation early enough to make a genuine difference to the outcome.

If you enjoy the value of an exterior scheme that’s received the same level of thought as the interior, we should talk.

We believe that landscape and architecture should be created together, not in sequence

A garden designed alongside a building, rather than retrofitted around it, produces something fundamentally different. The sightlines work, the materials speak to each other, the transition from inside to outside feels considered rather than coincidental and the client ends up with a property that feels wholly resolved.

This shapes how we engage with every architect-led project we take on. We’re not waiting for the building to be finished before we start thinking about the garden. We are at the table when decisions are still being made, contributing to discussions about orientation, levels, boundary treatment, planting for privacy and the relationship between interior spaces and the landscape beyond.

For new builds in particular, the question of where a house sits on its plot, how it relates to the topography and what the views from each room will be are as much landscape questions as architectural ones. We’re equipped to contribute meaningfully to those conversations.

How we collaborate

A commitment to quality

We’re experienced at working within a wider design team and understand the importance of clear communication and well-timed input. Our approach is structured, responsive and grounded in a shared commitment to delivering the best possible outcome.

Garden design at the highest level

Our work at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and RHS Tatton garden reflects our commitment to craftsmanship, detail and thoughtful design. Show gardens operate within a unique context, but they demand a level of precision, collaboration and creative clarity that informs everything we do, regardless of scale.

Technical design & delivery

Alongside concept design, we provide the technical clarity needed to realise each scheme on site. This ensures that the design intent is carried through with care and accuracy at every stage of the build.

At Rob Hardy & Co, we’re particularly well suited to projects where the landscape is considered an essential part of the overall design - not an addition to it.

Frequently asked questions

Here are a few frequently asked questions about how we collaborate with Architects. Please do get in touch with the studio if you have more questions about how we can help you with your project.

  • We work primarily on residential projects, private gardens for homeowners, typically in Yorkshire and the North of England although we also do work in other places around the country including central London. Many of our projects involve new builds or significant renovations where the garden is being designed from scratch alongside the architecture.

  • As early as possible. For new builds, we'd ideally be involved from the site appraisal stage. For renovations, we want to be part of the conversation before key decisions about levels, access and materials are made. The earlier we're involved, the more cohesive the outcome, and the less time is spent undoing decisions that didn't account for the landscape.

  • We work as part of the wider project team, taking direction from the lead architect or interior designer and always being mindful of the client relationship to deliver the best possible outcome.

  • We work to the standard RIBA stages, producing outline landscape plans, softworks schemes etc as well as planting plans, detailed technical drawings and full specifications. Our visualisations are produced to a high standard and can incorporate your architectural models and drawings. Everything we produce is designed to support a smooth, accurate build.

  • Our studio is based on the Harewood Estate in Yorkshire and we work primarily across the North of England. We'll always consider projects further afield where the brief is the right fit. Please get in touch to discuss.

  • Get in touch directly, by email or phone, and we'll arrange a conversation about your project. There's no obligation and we're always happy to talk through whether we're the right fit before either party commits to anything.
